DocRaptor alternatives

The closest DocRaptor alternatives are PDFShift for plain HTML conversion, CastPDF for paginated business documents with templates, and Gotenberg if you want to host it yourself. PDFMonkey and APITemplate.io suit template-first teams. All five list lower prices than DocRaptor at 10,000 documents a month. Our HTML to PDF API is one of them.

The five alternatives at a glance

  • PDFShift: the nearest like-for-like swap. Send HTML or a URL, get a PDF, no templates.
  • CastPDF: send the same HTML, or store it as a Liquid template. Print mode handles headers, footers and long tables.
  • Gotenberg: a free, self-hosted Docker API with Chromium and LibreOffice inside.
  • PDFMonkey: a template API with HTML, CSS and Liquid, and a low entry price.
  • APITemplate.io: templates built in a visual editor or an HTML editor.

Each option below has its best use, one strength, one weakness and its price at 1,000 PDFs a month. The price table under this section compares every product at three volumes.

Prices side by side

The cheapest monthly plan that includes each volume, from each vendor's public pricing page (checked October 2026, before tax). Where a vendor sells extra documents on a smaller plan, that can cost less than the plan shown; the text below works it out where it matters. CastPDF counts one PDF per document, whatever its page count.

Why teams look beyond DocRaptor

DocRaptor is a well-built product. It runs Prince, a commercial engine made for print layout, and tags PDFs for accessibility. So the reasons to leave are rarely about output quality. They are mostly about cost and fit.

  • The bill grows with volume. On its Max plan, 1,000 documents cost about $30. On Silver, it is about $25 per 1,000. Above 40,000 documents a month the price is custom.
  • You want a browser engine. Some teams prefer Chromium, because the PDF then matches what developers already see in Chrome.
  • You want templates, not HTML strings. DocRaptor converts the HTML you send. Teams that rebuild the same invoice thousands of times often prefer a stored template and a JSON payload.
  • You want it on your own servers. Some data may not leave your network, which rules out any hosted API.

How we ordered this list

The list runs from the smallest change to the biggest. First come tools that accept the HTML you already send to DocRaptor, with little or no rework. Then comes self-hosting, which keeps your HTML but adds servers. Last come template-first tools, where you rebuild the layout in their editor.

CastPDF is ours, so we placed it by that rule rather than at the top. It lands second, because it takes raw HTML as is, and the template step is optional.

The alternatives in detail

1. PDFShift

  • Best for: converting HTML you already generate, or live pages by URL.
  • Strength: a simple model. It runs Chromium and has no template layer to learn.
  • Weakness: usage counts per 5 MB of output, so large, image-heavy PDFs use several credits each.
  • Price at 1,000 PDFs a month: $24 (Boost).

2. CastPDF

  • Best for: invoices, statements and reports that run over several pages and are made from data.
  • Strength: print mode repeats table headers, keeps rows whole and supports @page margin boxes with page counters. Templates are stored with a live preview.
  • Weakness: no accessibility tagging, and no URL input. Layouts built on Prince-only CSS need rework.
  • Price at 1,000 PDFs a month: $19 (Starter), with 100 free live PDFs a month before that.

3. Gotenberg

  • Best for: teams that must keep every document inside their own infrastructure.
  • Strength: open source under the MIT licence. Its Chromium, LibreOffice and other engines also convert office files.
  • Weakness: you run the Docker containers, scale them and keep them updated.
  • Price at 1,000 PDFs a month: Free software; you run the servers.

4. PDFMonkey

  • Best for: small volumes of template-based documents, built with HTML, CSS and Liquid.
  • Strength: a low entry price, plus optional pay-as-you-go documents on top of a plan.
  • Weakness: the free plan cannot load external images, fonts or CSS, so a realistic test needs the trial.
  • Price at 1,000 PDFs a month: €15 (Pro).

5. APITemplate.io

  • Best for: teams that want to lay out a document visually as well as in HTML.
  • Strength: two editors, a visual (WYSIWYG) one and an HTML one.
  • Weakness: no overage price is listed. At the limit it sends alerts, and you upgrade by hand.
  • Price at 1,000 PDFs a month: $24 (PDF Basic).

How to choose

Start with the question that rules options out fastest. Then test your hardest real document in the two tools that remain.

  • Must documents stay on your servers? Choose Gotenberg, or keep a library such as Puppeteer in house.
  • Do you print pages that already exist at a URL? PDFShift accepts the address directly.
  • Do your documents run past one page, with tables and page numbers? Try CastPDF with "mode": "print" and your longest file.
  • Do non-developers design the layout? APITemplate.io offers a visual editor; PDFMonkey and CastPDF use HTML and CSS.
  • Do you need tagged, accessible output? Stay with DocRaptor; see the next section.

Price is the last filter, because it shifts with volume. At 10,000 PDFs a month CastPDF costs $49, and 50,000 cost $129. Plans, overage and the spending cap are on the pricing page.

A fair test before you switch

Sales pages look alike, so let one real document decide. Put the same file through the free tier or trial of each tool on your shortlist, and check the same things in each PDF.

  • Your longest document. Use a real statement or report that runs to 20 pages or more, not a one-page sample.
  • A table that crosses pages. Does the header row repeat, and does any row get cut in half?
  • Headers, footers and numbering. Check "Page 7 of 22" on every page, and a different first page if you use one.
  • Blocks that must stay together. A totals box or a signature line should never be split across two pages.
  • Fonts and images. Load your brand font from a URL and add a high-resolution logo, then check the file size.
  • Retries and errors. Find out how each tool handles a retried request, and whether it bills the document twice. Then send broken data and read the error you get back.

Keep the PDFs side by side and note which tool needed changes to your HTML. That list of changes is the real cost of moving, often more than the price difference.

When staying with DocRaptor makes sense

Not every team should switch. DocRaptor tags PDFs automatically or from CSS, aimed at WCAG 2.0, Section 508 and PDF/UA. None of the five alternatives above lists accessibility tagging in the facts we checked. If an accessibility audit applies to your documents, that alone can decide it.

Prince is also a mature print engine. Long, carefully typeset documents written for its CSS extensions will not move cleanly to Chromium. And above its public plans, DocRaptor offers an Enterprise tier at a custom price, which some buyers need for procurement.

Trying CastPDF with your DocRaptor HTML

Your existing HTML is the fastest test, so you do not need to build a template first. Create a free test key with the quickstart. Then send your HTML in the html field, your stylesheet in css, and set "mode": "print".

Test PDFs are free, unlimited and watermarked, at 20 requests a minute. Standard @page rules, margin boxes and break-inside: avoid carry over. If a table header does not repeat, check that it sits in a <thead>; the guide to repeating table headers has the details.

For a deeper look at the two products, read CastPDF vs DocRaptor. Paid plans start at $19 a month for 2,500 PDFs.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the cheapest alternative to DocRaptor?

Gotenberg costs nothing in licences, but you pay for the servers and the time to run it. Among hosted APIs, the cheapest choice depends on volume. The price table on this page compares them at 1,000, 10,000 and 50,000 documents.

Is there a DocRaptor alternative that also uses Prince?

None of the five options on this page does. PDFShift, CastPDF and Gotenberg use Chromium. If you depend on Prince features, compare carefully before you move.

Which alternative needs the fewest changes to my HTML?

PDFShift and CastPDF both accept raw HTML, so you can send what you send today. Prince-only CSS needs replacing in either case. Template tools need the layout rebuilt in their editor.

Can I self-host a replacement for DocRaptor?

Yes. Gotenberg runs as a Docker container on your own servers, under the MIT licence. You take on scaling, updates and monitoring in exchange.

Do the alternatives offer free test documents?

It varies. CastPDF gives unlimited watermarked test PDFs and a free monthly allowance of live PDFs. The others list free plans or trials of different sizes, shown in the sources table.

Which DocRaptor alternative is best for multi-page invoices?

Pick one that repeats table headers and keeps rows whole across pages. CastPDF does both in print mode. Whichever you consider, test it with your longest real invoice.
